Let’s be honest: triathlon and road cycling are expensive hobbies.

I’ve spent way too much on gear over the years, and I’m always looking for ways to get quality without paying European or American brand premiums. Which is how I ended up ordering carbon wheels from AliExpress at midnight — as you do.

Why Carbon Wheels at All?

Carbon wheels are significantly lighter than aluminum, and with a deep rim profile (40–60mm) they slice through the air more efficiently — translating to real watt savings on flat roads. They’re also stiffer, which improves power transfer in sprints.

Does the difference matter for an amateur? Honestly — not always. But they look great, and sometimes that’s enough.

Who Are Elite Wheels?

Elite Wheels is a Chinese carbon wheel manufacturer that’s built a solid reputation in the cycling community over the last few years. They manufacture directly and sell without middlemen, which is how they can offer a product that competes with Western brands at a fraction of the price.

The ENT 2.0 is one of their best-selling models: a road wheelset with a 50mm rim depth, designed to balance aerodynamics with all-around usability — from daily training rides to race day.

$285 vs. $1,400+

The cheapest carbon wheelsets I found from European brands started at around $1,400. I paid $285 for the Elite Wheels ENT 2.0 on AliExpress — but that was a coupon deal I caught at the right moment. The regular price is higher and fluctuates, so it’s worth watching for sales. With import taxes, my total came to around $330.

Either way, that’s a 4–5x price difference compared to Western brands. For that gap to make sense you’d have to get an objectively worse product — so I was curious whether that was actually the case.

Unboxing — Better Than Expected

The wheels arrived well-packaged, each in its own protective sleeve. The rim looked clean and well-finished. Everything felt solid — spokes properly tensioned, no flex. The rear hub made a satisfying mechanical sound, a little loud but in a good way.

One nice touch: a handwritten quality-control slip signed by the person at the factory who inspected the wheel. I didn’t know I needed that, but it genuinely made me feel better.

Fitting a tire on a 50mm carbon rim isn’t easy — budget some time and patience for that part.

On the Road

From the first ride, the wheels felt excellent. Not “good for AliExpress” — just good. Stiff, responsive, well-balanced. Whether they made me faster is debatable, but the confidence boost was real.

I haven’t had any issues with trueness, spoke tension, or hub performance after months of use.

The Bottom Line

The Chinese cycling industry has undergone a serious transformation in recent years. You could probably find lighter or faster carbon wheels from European manufacturers — but they’d cost 4–5x more, and that’s worth thinking about.

If you’re looking to get into carbon without breaking the bank, Elite Wheels is a serious option. The ENT 2.0 rides like a product from a legitimate brand, not a cheap AliExpress gamble.

Just maybe don’t tell your partner how much you spent. Or that your old wheels were perfectly fine.
